Are You Feeling Down?

Psalm 40:1-2 (ESV)
1 I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
I recently had a conversation with a friend who was struggling with depression and anxious thoughts. He was praying for God to restore his failing marriage, but with each passing day he found himself more discouraged as he and his wife continued to drift further apart. It seemed like every prayer was being slapped down to earth by God.
The more we talked the more his body language revealed an emotionally exhausted man. His shoulders were slumped and his head kept hanging lower and lower. The Lord put it on my heart in that moment to open the Scriptures to Psalm 40. My friend needed a reminder that God was not slapping his prayers down and throwing him into a pit of despair. The opposite was true. God saw my friend in that pit and was willing to jump in there with him!
There will be times when it feels like God is distant. You may feel isolated and alone when your prayers seem to go unanswered. Life will feel unfair and your thoughts will sink lower and lower. I know you don’t like to be crushed, pressed, or tested in this life, but that is often where God will build your strength and character the most.
If you are in the middle of a difficult season, like my friend, please know that God has not left you. You are not alone and your prayers are being heard. In fact, I want you to begin searching for all the ways God has been answering you. Start looking around and seeing where God is at work. You are not alone, my friend. Wait patiently on the Lord and continue to lift your eyes to Him. Where does your help come from? It comes from the Lord!
Wait patiently in the pit and I assure you the Lord will meet you there with a rope. He will draw you up and out of this season. He will set your feet upon a rock, and the strength you have acquired in your soul will make you stronger for the future.
God will get you through this, my friend. Wait patiently and look for the rope. But once He lifts you out of the pit know that He has equipped you to be the one to throw the rope to the next person. You will survive this, and someone in the future will need to know how you made it out of the pit. And you will have the answer because you have been there. Now do you understand?
Oh Lord, life can be so hard. I am waiting patiently for you to get me out of this pit, but I am getting tired. Please here my cry and throw me a rope. In Jesus Name, Amen!
