He Is Your Defense

Psalm 62:6-8 (ESV)

He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O

people;  pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah

There is peace in knowing that truth is held in the hands of the Lord. Jesus knows you and He knows your situation. It can be very hurtful to be accused of something that is not true, and it can be devastating when accusations, deceptions, and falsehoods are leveled against you by those who were friends, perhaps even loved ones.

Jesus was falsely accused by religious leaders and "unknown people" who were quick to make up stories about Him and twist His own words. (Mark 14:56-58) But it was the betrayal of Judas that probably stung more, and it was Peter's denial of Jesus that was downright hurtful. (Luke 22:60-62) Even though Jesus knew it was coming! (Luke 22:31-34)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Jesus knows how you feel.

The words of verse 4 in our Psalm today hit hard. "They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse." It's sad, but the only goal of certain people in your life may be to"take you down" from your position. Why do some folks have to be so mean?

We are living in the product of a fallen world, and that means the world will show you its true nature through the actions of misguided people. This may upset you, but I think it's humbling to know that you are never too far away from being one of those "people" to someone else. Let that marinate in your thoughts for a moment.

Overall, I think it's important to read all of Psalm 62 today. Notice how God alone becomes the focus of the Psalmist. Notice how the Psalmist refuses to let the fallen nature of the world distract from the power of God and the Lord's promise of defending those who love Him!

When false accusations are made against you and you desperately want to declare your innocence from the rooftops, understand that God is your rock and your defense. Let the Lord become your soul focus...and wait patiently.

Romans 12:19

19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."

You need to trust that God will bring truth into the light and it will all happen in His timing.

I'm reminded of the story in Esther when the evil Haman built a gallow so he could hang Mordecai, a trusted servant of the Lord. Haman devised a perfect plan (or so he thought) to destroy Mordecai. I won't tell you the whole story, but in the end God orchestrates events so that Haman really messes up and Esther's husband (King Ahasuerus) ends up hanging Haman on the same gallows he built for Mordecai! It's a great story. Read about it in Esther 7.

God's ways and timing are always better than yours. Even when it comes to playing defense. Your timing cries out for immediate justice when you are done wrong. But the end goal of your timing is to bring glory to you. God's timing and defense, on the other hand, will bring justice and all glory to the Lord. Which is where it needs to be!

So trust in God, my friend. His ways and His truth are your best defense in every situation.
