Passing on Your Story

ree

Psalm 44:1 ESV

44 O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old.

The older I get the more I understand the need for wisdom to be passed on from generation to generation. It's important for my children to receive wisdom and knowledge from me that I have learned through the years. It's also important that they hear stories of God's sovereignty and goodness over my life so that they will see how His faithfulness gave life to them!

A year before my father-in-law went to be with Jesus, our whole family went on vacation to Disney World. On one of the final days we had planned to go down to the resort pool as a family, but the Florida weather had other ideas. The thunderstorm forced us to stay in our rooms so we decided to huddle up in one room together and we talked for hours.

I don't know how we got on the subject, but my father-in-law began to share about his time in the army and his deployment to Korea. There were funny stories, sad stories, and even stories that had elements of mystery. It was wonderful to just sit and listen as I learned more about my father-in-law than I ever knew. The final story led to him coming home and meeting his wife, and of course, that was great for me as I would marry his daughter years later!

When I think back on that night I am so thankful for the thunderstorm that kept us confined to that hotel room. I know my wife feels the same way as she heard her father tell those stories. We had no idea he would be gone a little over a year later. But the stories were passed on. His faith was passed on. His trust in the Lord was passed on. I learned that night how God's hand of providence had been all over my family long before I was even a thought in this life.

Thank you, Jesus!

Don't ever underestimate the importance of passing on your stories of God's faithfulness. If you have children, share the stories! They need to hear what the Lord has done in your life. Don't ever be shy in sharing what God has done for you in "the days of old."
