Psalm 56:4
In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust, I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?
Psalm 56:9
My enemies will turn back on the day that I call. This I know, God is for me!
Psalm 56:10
In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?
There are moments in life when you have no other choice but to rely on the Lord. This was certainly the case for David as he wrote the beautiful words of Psalm 56. The anointed future King of Israel felt like anything but a King as he ran for his life. Saul (the current King) was searching for David and wanted him dead.
This caused David to run into enemy territory. Specifically, the town of Gath (home of the Phillistines) and even worse, the hometown of Goliath! Needless to say, David did not have a lot of fans in that area.
Keep all of this in mind as David writes multiple times that he will not be afraid. He will trust in the Lord. What can flesh do to me? What can man do to me?
But I want to point out something very important in these wonderful words of faith, David still struggled with his emotions during this time. There were times when he WAS afraid. There were times when he WAS sad. In fact, he had moments of complete breakdown. That's right, read that again. David had moments when he had emotional breakdowns!
And this is evidenced by his words in verse 8.
"You number my wanderings. Put my tears in Your bottle; are they not in Your book?"
That's real talk right there!
I am a big fan of being honest with the Lord, and David certainly modeled it.
However, I believe God honored his honesty and reassured him that the Lord's presence would protect him. Which caused David to declare in a confident voice, "God is for me."
Real faith is built in the trenches of life. Real trust in the Lord is built when you are delivered by the Lord out of traumatic circumstances.
My friend, you need to know that calling out to God is your best option when you feel the weight of the world crashing down on you. Calling out to God is your best option when you feel like an enemy has it out for you. Calling out to God is your best option in every circumstance!
When we call out to God we effectively place the burden in His hands, and that is when God shows off! Let the Lord step into your situation, just like he did with David, and deliver you from your troubles.
It all begins with calling out to the Lord, and when He shows up you will know for certain that God is for you. And when God is for you...What can they do to you?
