You Need to Tell Someone

Psalm 66:16-17 (ESV)

16 Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. 17 I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue.

I read somewhere recently that negative people are the greatest evangelists in the world. I laughed at that thought until I realized it's true. When bad things happen we love to tell anyone who will listen. If someone else tells us about a negative thing that happened to them we say, "That's nothing, listen to what happened to me!"

Why are we more excited about telling negative stories instead of positive?

In Psalm 66 our verses for today encourage us to tell people about the good things God has done in our lives. If you haven't done this recently you need to tell someone your story!

Several years ago I took my family to Disney World and we enjoyed their table service dining plan. There was no chance my family of 6 could have afforded this plan, but Disney had offered it for free to all guests who stayed at one of their resorts. Since we had the plan it enabled us to eat dinner every day at one of the fancy restaurants on property. There were some great ones, but my absolute favorite turned out to be Boma, an amazing buffet at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. It was so good!

The meats, the sides, the desserts...all of it was absolutely delicious and blew me away! They had these little cake desserts that were soaked in a caramel sauce and topped with whip cream. They were small enough that you could easily eat three or four, so I grabbed six or eight. I literally ate myself sick. (Remind me to write a blog about excess and gluttony in the future!)

I enjoyed Boma so much that I tell everyone about the restaurant when they go to Disney World. In fact, every time my family talks about our Disney vacations I talk about Boma. I could literally make the rest of this devotion about the food because I love to tell the story!

But let's get to the point.

Psalm 66, which is titled How Awesome Are Your Deeds, is filled with 20 verses of testifying to God's goodness and mercy. The Psalmist wants everyone to know what God has done for him. He sings, he worships, he praises, but pay attention to something even more important, the Psalmist is meditating on THANKFULNESS to God! In the process, the writer is calling for an audience to come and hear the story. It doesn't matter if the audience wants to hear it or not, they're gonna be told what God has done!

You know the saying, "If a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound?" Well how about, "If you don't tell people what God has done in your life did He really do anything?"

As you read Psalm 66 please pay attention to the detail of how the Chief musician has "experienced" God in a joyful way. He lets us know that he simply can't stop talking about the Lord.

Do you have a story about God's goodness in your life? Has God done something for you that the world needs to hear? If so, it is a story that needs to be told again and again.

Do you know there are people every where who secretly believe God has left them? Abandoned them. Neglected them.

They walk around every day and believe God will not help them or work in their lives. This leads many to believe there is no God at all. And yet, YOU have a story they need to hear. YOU have an experience of God's goodness that will apply directly to THEIR situation. YOU are the messenger from God who needs to tell them what God has done for you, and what you believe God can do for them! Read Psalm 66 again, my friend. And the next time God gives you an opportunity, you need to tell your story! It could literally save someone's eternity!
