Read Psalm 3
Psalm 3:3-4
3 But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. 4 I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah
In the church I grew up in we often sang choruses that were taken directly from the Psalms. I have fond memories of singing the praise chorus, “My glory and the lifter of my head.” The mere thought of it brings a smile to my face and takes me back to a time of joy and celebration with God’s people in the sanctuary.
In light of that, consider this. King David wrote these beautiful words as he was fleeing Jerusalem in fear of his life. The humiliated king was hiding from his son, Absalom, and it appeared to all of Israel that God’s favor had shifted away from David. Could it be true that David was no longer God’s anointed king? Had he lost God’s hand of favor just like Saul?
What was David’s response in a time of uncertainty? Prayer and Praise.
David knew that his hope and vindication would not be placed or found in the attitudes and opinions of people, but in the mercy and protection of the Lord. The same applies for you and I.
It should bring you great joy to know that you can cry out to God and He will hear you. Not only will He hear you, the Lord will gently reach down and lift your head so you can gaze into His eyes of mercy and love. God truly is the glory and lifter of your head. Eyes that look up to Him will be met with compassion and reassurance from the holy hill. Are you in a season where you need reassurance and protection from the Lord? Cry out to Him and look up.
Lord, you are the glory and the lifter of my head. May I always lift my eyes to you in my time of need. You are my shield, my protector, my living Hope. Amen.
