Read Psalm 7
Psalm 7:8-9 8 The Lord judges the peoples; judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness and according to the integrity that is in me. 9 Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may you establish the righteous—you who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God!
We often view a judge as someone who sentences a person to punishment when a crime has been committed. This sends most people to a place of fear when they hear they’ll need to stand before a judge. But the Bible’s use of the word is more often meant to convey the arrival of justice, vindication, or the proper distinction between right and wrong.
In Psalm 7 King David is falsely accused by a man named Cush. The subject and cause of the accusation is unknown but it calls David’s honor into question. This hurt David’s heart so deeply that he brings his pain to the Lord, asking God to become his refuge and his Judge. David has done nothing wrong so he knows and trusts the Lord to reveal the truth in the midst of false accusations.
I love how David still desires to be clean in the Lord’s eyes even though he knows he is innocent. Verse 3 reveals a man after God’s own heart as he asks the Lord to judge and correct him if “there is wrong in my hands.” We should all learn from his example.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation and accusations and untruths are being levied against you, know that God is your one true Judge. Seek the Lord in prayer and ask for wisdom to learn from the situation, and also for any wrong that you have committed to be made right, even if you’re not aware of it. It’s always best to be clean in the eyes of the Lord.
Do not let false accusations and lies crush you. Let your Father in heaven be your defender, and ultimately, the Judge!
Father, it can be so hard when hurtful words are spoken against me. Especially when the words are not true. If there is any wrong in me please make me clean. But overall, Lord, be my refuge. Be my defender. Be my judge. I trust your counsel completely. Amen
