You Need the Wisdom of elders

Psalm 71:18(ESV)

18 So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

No matter what your age is, the Lord is never finished with you. As long as there is breath in your lungs there is wisdom to be shared. With each year of life we live we gain valuable experience, knowledge, and wisdom. It is the responsibility of the older generation to pass this wisdom on to the next generation.

Gracefully and with humility.

The Psalmist is thankful to God for giving him opportunities in his old age to be useful in mentoring and "training up" the leaders of today and tomorrow. And what is the most important message to young people?

Praising the Lord and giving glory to God should always be a first priority.

Grey hairs on the head are the symbol of a life well-lived. Proverbs 20:29 says, "The glory of young men is their strength, and grey hair is the splendor of the old."

On Tuesday I had lunch with a mentor of mine, Dr. Charles McGowan. He is nearing 90 years old and has been in ministry longer than I've been alive. I would be foolish not to take his council and put it into practice. I look forward to meeting with him every month! He is such a blessing to me

Psalm 71 is written by someone who is reflecting back on life, and they can see the goodness of God in every year they have lived.

Psalm 71:6(ESV)

6 Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother's womb. Praise is continually of you.

Can you see the thankfulness for God's presence extending all the way back to birth?

As we get older we realize more and more the sovereignty of God in every situation. The younger generation needs an older mentor to tell them it's gonna be okay. They need someone who has gone through the wilderness and lived to tell the tale. They need to hear how God brought them through the most difficult situations and made them stronger on the other side. They need to know that God holds us in his hands the entire time!

What a beautiful Psalm this is for the older generation. God has placed opportunities all around you to speak into the lives of young people. Proclaim His Might to the next generation!

P.S. And for the younger generation out there, go find your wise mentor. God has one out there for you.
