Jesus in Plain sight

READ PSALM 89:19-52

Psalm 89:48(ESV)

⁴⁸ What man can live and never see death?  Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah

Human emotions.

They are so fragile, unstable, and changing like the shifting of wind. Think of a small child, for example. When you give them an ice cream cone they will shout, "This is the greatest day ever!" But if they ask for another and you say no, they might respond, "My life is ruined!"

When I read through our verses for Psalm 89, I can't help but think about our attitude toward Jesus and how we subconsciously treat him with a mindset of, "What have you done for me lately?"

Much of Psalm 89 praises God for the promise of a King. He will be the fulfillment of the covenant made with King David. There is a devotion to the Lord in the wording, and an allegiance that gives thanks for God's mercy, faithfulness, and might. In verse 27, there appears to be a promise of the Messiah.

²⁷ And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

How exciting! The Apostle Paul must have been thinking of this verse when he wrote Colossians 1:15-18. But as the Psalm continues we play witness to a shift in the emotions of the people.

Psalm 89:38 (ESV)

³⁸ But now you have cast off and rejected; you are full of wrath against your anointed.

Verse 44 goes on to tell us that the glory of the anointed one will cease!

Wait a minute, why would the people turn so quickly against God's anointed?

Psalm 89 is literally giving us the progression of how Jesus would be treated when He became flesh and dwelt among the people of Israel. Again, this is the life of Jesus hidden in plain sight.

The triumphal entry now makes complete sense. Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem by a joyful crowd. They shouted praises and laid palm branches on the ground as He rode into the city on a donkey. The people believed they were getting a Messiah who would establish an earthly Kingdom, and the Roman oppressors would be brought to their knees! "Hosanna," they shouted. "Best day ever!"

Less than a week later, the cheering was gone. Once it became clear that Jesus had not met their expectations, the crowd became angry and demanded a crucifixion.

But take heart, verse 48 asks a powerful question.

I think you know the answer. (Spoiler Alert: Jesus) Death could not defeat Him. He will reign forever, and those who believe in Him will receive eternal life in Him. (Romans 10:9)

I want you to hold that truth in your head the next time life turns on you. I want you to remember that the world turned on Jesus, but He took it head on and came out victorious on the other side. And just like Jesus defeated death when He was cast off and rejected, you have the same power that raised Christ from the dead living in you. (Romans 8:11)

In Him you live, move, and have your being. The power of Jesus, displayed in you through the Holy Spirit, hidden in plain sight.

"Best day ever!"
