Read Psalm 5
Psalm 5:3
3 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.
I have been a night owl most of my life. It’s easy for me to stay up late and sleep in in the morning. When I would hear people talk about waking up at sunrise to spend time with the Lord in mornings I knew that wasn't a calling God put on my life!
I believed my only hope for spending time in the Word and prayer would be in the evening hours. However, as the years went by I began to notice how many times I would neglect my nightly time with the Lord. The events of the day would exhaust me and my brain would reach full capacity. “I’ll do it tomorrow,” became my unhealthy moto. It was clear that "saving" my quiet time with the Lord for the evening was not a recipe for a deeper relationship. Something had to change.
In July 2022 I made the change. Actually, I wouldn’t call it an instant change. I would call it the beginning of a lifelong transformation. Instead of reading my Bible in the evening and spending time with the Lord before bed, I devoted myself to a “Bible first” mentality. No cell phone. No TV. No computer. Bible – first!
In the morning I find a comfortable, quiet place and read through one chapter in the Old Testament, one chapter in the New Testament, and one Psalm. I always know the night before what I will be reading in the morning. When you already have it set in advance what you will do the next day it increases the likelihood that you will actually do it. The same goes for exercise, eating healthy, and being more productive in general. Put a plan in place with specific details for executing the plan and it is far more likely that you will follow through with it.
Utilize the day before to Set the Tone for the Next Day!
Know before you go to bed what tomorrow will look like.
This devotional is the result of me reading through the Psalms several times with this process. Spending my mornings with the Lord is a decision I will always cherish. The Lord gives me a different lens to see the world through when I spend time with Him in the morning. He sets a holy tone for my day. I encourage you to spend your mornings with God. Allow Him to set the tone. You won’t regret it.
Lord, give me the wisdom to spend my mornings with you. I know you will guide my steps and my decisions when I start my day with you. Amen.
