Thankfulness For a Helping Hand

READ PSALM 92

Psalm 92:1-2 (ESV)

1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; ² to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night.

The Psalms are songs meant to be sung. Let that thought sink in as you read the first two verses of Psalm 92. "It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to His name." Singing is one of the highest forms of intimacy. We all know what our voices sound like when we talk to each other and we don't give much thought to it, but our singing voice is a whole new form of expression. Singing feels like removing the veil and revealing our true self. I think that's why most people don't want others to hear them sing. We like to keep things private.

I am currently reading a book called Rhythms of Grace by Mike Cosper. Mike says that if we were to remove all the scriptures that talk about singing praises to God, or lifting our hands, or playing instruments and worshipping the Lord, we would be taking away most of the pages in the Bible.

He's right! Singing praise to God and giving thanks for what He has done are benchmarks of scripture. So why do so many struggle to sing praises, lift holy hands, and give themselves completely to worshipping God?

Maybe we're not as thankful as we think. Maybe we are taking a little too much credit for what God has done and we are foolishly trusting in our own power. Just a few verses later in Psalm 92 this thought is addressed.

Psalm 92:5-6 (ESV)

⁵ How great are your works, O Lord! Your thoughts are very deep! ⁶ The stupid man cannot know; the fool cannot understand this.

Those are harsh words. The stupid person refuses to praise the Lord. The foolish person doesn't understand that without Jesus he can do nothing! Thankfully, you're not a stupid or foolish person, so thankfulness to God comes easy to you. Right?

The final 6 verses of this Psalm give credit where credit is due, at the feet of the Lord. He is the One who reaches down from heaven and gives you all that you need to make it through another day. He wakes you up in the morning and he closes your eyes at night. The air that is in your lungs right now was placed there by your Heavenly Creator.

Understand this, praising the Lord Most High is the least you can do. Without Him, you couldn't do anything. So the next time you have an opportunity to be thankful for the helping hand the Lord has given you...Praise His Name!
