Psalm 68:4-5 (ESV)
4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! 5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.
About two years ago we had just returned home from Wednesday night church when we saw that our street was filled with firetrucks and an ambulance. One of our neighbors was having a medical emergency, and not long after the ambulance took her away we received the heart-breaking news that she had passed away. She left behind her husband of many years.
When I went to lunch with him not long after he shared that she hadn't had any issues at all, and there had been no warning signs of the stroke that took her life. For him, a world that was full and complete, had now been completely changed.
How does a person praise the Lord in a moment like this?
How does a person do what Psalm 68 says and "lift up a song to him who rides on the clouds?"
How does a person not feel alone?
I don't pretend to know what this type of loneliness feels like, but I was so encouraged by how my neighbor held his head high and leaned into his church community. His wife knew Jesus with her whole heart, and even though his missed her deeply, he now found his joy in enjoying the same things they used to enjoy together. Which was in serving the Lord in their church.
God is a "Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation."
It is through the promise of Jesus' return and his victory over death that we can be assured of reuniting with our loved ones who believe in him. And with that blessed assurance, we can lean into his promise that he will never leave us nor forsake us. I believe this is the greatest promise in Scripture. When we believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior we receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit into our heart, and Jesus will always be with us wherever we go.
This is a promise that is worthy of our praise. It should put a song in our heart even during sad times. If you are feeling lonely right now let me encourage you to read Psalm 68 and rejoice in the fact that God is with you.
