What Limits do you place on God?

READ PSALM 89:1-18

Psalm 89:3-4 (ESV)

³ You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: ⁴ ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’” Selah

Forever.

That's a big word. Do you know how long forever is?

We can't truly comprehend "forever" and we certainly have no understanding of what "eternity" will look and feel like either. And yet, in Psalm 89 we see God promising forever to King David and the establishment of his throne.

What exactly is the promise? Jesus!

Throughout the Bible we are reminded that God's ways are not our ways, and those words carry the most truth when we reflect upon Jesus. There are literally hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament that promise a coming Messiah and the establishment of an eternal Kingdom.

The Messiah would be the fulfillment of God's promise to King David that his throne would be established forever. It's easy to read about "forever" but we don't truly meditate on the reality of forever because our earthly wisdom is not able to comprehend or imagine it.

Let me prove it.

Why in the world would God's covenant people, the Jews, confine the promise of forever to an earthly throne? It was always the promise of God that His Son (His seed) would come to fulfill a heavenly, eternal purpose.

One of the saddest flaws in our fallen nature as human beings is our insistance that God must operate within earthly constraints. When you read Psalm 89, especially the first 18 verses that I have highlighted today, you read about a God who cannot be contained. You read about a God who cannot be described. You read about a God who created all things, is above all things, is before all things, and has power over all things...when you think about it, how silly is it for us to try to tie the hands of God with temporary things?

I don't want to ignore the difficulties you may be going through today, but let me encourage to read Psalm 89:1-18 again so you can...

Colossians 3:2 (ESV)

² Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

When we open our hearts and minds to God's heavenly perspective we will see His promises through His eyes, and forever will take on a new meaning. The problems your facing today will be understood as temporary as God shifts your way of thinking toward the eternal...God reigns forever!

Let's go back to God's covenant promise to King David, which was that He would establish David's throne forever. This was not a constrained promise with temporary benefits. It was literally blowing the lid off time and the constraints of the world. God the Father was promising the coming of His Son, and when His Son arrived in the person of Jesus, the world would never be the same again! Even death, which was undefeated, lost to Jesus!

Through Jesus the Kingdom of God would be made available to all who believe in Him.

Romans 6:9-11 (ESV)

⁹ We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. ¹⁰ For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. ¹¹ So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

What problem are you facing today? What temporary thing is stealing your eternal joy? What has caused you to lose sight of God's power over forever? What limits are you placing on God?

My friend, get your mind right. No one and nothing are bigger than Jesus. He established His throne forever, and when you believe in Him you take part in that.
