Psalm 63:1-3 (ESV)
63 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. 3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.
Worry is a part of life. There are a lot of things that are out of your control. So what's your game plan when worry hits? Don't tell me you just let the negative thoughts of worry run unchecked in your mind. That's a recipe for disaster.
You need to establish a time-tested response plan for when you begin to worry about things that are out of your control.
The author of our beautiful Psalm for today was King David. He wrote these words of worship and praise to the Lord while he ran for his life. David's son, Absalom, was the leader of a mutiny that tried to remove David from the throne. And it was nearly successful!
In the wilderness of Judah David had a choice. He could sulk and worry about the devastating state of his family and the fact that his son was out to destroy him, or he could devote his full attention to the power and majesty of God's goodness. David chose worship instead of worrying.
No doubt he was tired, thirsty, and hungry, but instead of letting his physical needs control his emotions, David took the opportunity to express his deep, heartfelt desire to find a place of sanctuary so he could worship the Lord.
Here's a quick question for you. Do you fight for worship? What I mean is, do you do everything in your power to make sure you are in a house of worship every single week? Are you determined to praise the Lord with your lips? In your time of worry do you delight in worship?
Here is what David discovered. Worship replaces Worry!
The worries of life should drive you to become a more devoted worshipper of Jesus. Your souls should thirst, your flesh should long, your hands should lift, and your lips should praise the Lord! Even if you're in a "dry and weary land."
I have always loved what my mom told my family to do when worry hit, "Put on some praise music and sing to the Lord!"
I'll ask you one more time. What's your game plan when worry hits? Do you have a worship playlist that is ready to go? Is Sunday morning circled on your calendar so you can make sure you are at church and ready to worship? It's time to drop the worry and get ready for worship!
